When you’re walking through the supermarket and you’re confronted with the cake on the front cover of the latest issue of Donna Hay magazine, is there any way you can pick it up and put it back on the shelf again? I think not!

As usual, Donna’s magazines are crammed full of gorgeous photos of food and homewares that make you wish you could vanish in to the pages of the magazine and not come out for a while. They are also scattered with lots of quick, simple and yummy recipes that the average punter would cook and eat with ease, and a sprinkling of harder and slightly ‘wanky’ items for those with a bit of a sense of adventure.

For me, this month, page 59 and the ‘baked chocolate custard cups’ grabbed my eye. It’s basically a standard baked custard recipe with 150g of dark chocolate thrown in for good measure. For those watching the waist line, check out the ‘red lentil and white bean soup’ and for those who are lazy and/or busy, the ‘one pot wonders’ will give you a helping hand in the kitchen without having to resort to frozen crap from the supermarket!

A simple recipe that parents around the world dread! “Raging Red Cordial on the Run” has the ability to turn any quiet child in to a menace that won’t stop jumping around, wriggling and making noises! Easy to prepare, not so easy to live with!!

INGREDIENTS
Water
Red Cordial
Ice Cubes

EQUIPMENT NEEDED
Your favourite drink bottle
Measuring Spoons & cups

METHOD

Measure out cordial in to your water bottle. Read the label on the cordial bottle for specific measurements

Top up the drink bottle with water, preferably filtered.

Drop in ice-cubes

RECIPE VARIATIONS
For a calmer drink, use Ribena instead of red cordial

TIPS
There are plenty of drink bottles on the market that have a wide mouth and are bpa free that suit this drink perfectly. Visit BPA Free Water Bottles for Australia’s best selection.

For that child with too many beans in them, the best bottle choice is something from the Camelbak Water Bottle range. Our personal favourite is something from the Camelbak Better Bottle range. These bottles are BPA Free, made from safe Tritan plastic (or stainless steel) and have a drinking straw and a bite valve. This makes them easy to drink from, leak-proof when closed and spill-proof when open.

Nigella cooks fabulous simple food, and makes it look easy while still producing a tasty result. In this book & serious, she simplifies time consuming recipes, making cooking on the run easy & tasty. Our favourite was a spin on the old ’spag bol’ which involves using garlic infused olive oil, caramelised onions and some red lentils instead of pasta. Flip through your copy of Nigella Express for this and many other fabulous recipes.

Note: the book has a lot more in it than the series, so start your stoves!
